Plenazos Callejeros, Memory and Historical Narratives The origins of plena baffle even the most avid historians of Puerto Rican music. However, many scholars (Quintero Rivera & Alvarez, 2001; Campos Parsi, 1976; Echevarria, 1984; Guerrero, 2013) agree that the Afro-Puerto Rican genre grew out of the experiences of thousands of Puerto Ricans who struggled to survive their pauperized living conditions at the turn of the twentieth century. The historiography of the plena has also described the genre as the periódico del pueblo. (people’s newspaper). The late anthropologist Ramón López questioned this premise by suggesting that the plena is a musicalized gossip far removed from the rigidity, criticism, and search for truth common to journalistic practices. He proposed to define plena as “... a movement of community life centered on the musicalization of bembeteo [gossip]...that produced an overwhelming change in…the memories of the Puerto Rican people'' (Lopez, 140).
